RMG workers go on rampage over 'missing' of fellow

The workers of a garments factory have locked into a clash with the law enforcers over “missing” of a fellow worker in Kashempur Nayapara area under Gazipur City Corporation area on Monday morning.

Witnesses said the workers of Multifab Limited announced work abstention and vandalised the factory, demanding the trace of a fellow worker, who reportedly went missing on Saturday.

The agitated workers claimed that Mehedi Hasan, who works in the cutting section of the factory, has been killed and dumped by the former cutting manager, Nazim Uddin.

They said Nazim might have killed Mehedi as the factory authority had sacked him over an altercation with Mehedi.

They suspected that the body of Mehedi has been dumped on the rooftop of the factory building saying that they found blood stain there.

Mehedi's uncle Amirul Islam said: “Mehedi left the factory on Saturday afternoon but, he did not come home till Monday afternoon. He had a phone conversation with his wife around 4pm on Saturday.”

“During the conversation, Mehedi told his wife that he will come home by 7pm. The former cutting manager might have killed my nephew as he gave Mehedi death threats after losing the job.”

Administrative Officer of the factory Bibhuti Hira told the Dhaka Tribune: “It is true that Mehedi left office at 4:40pm on Saturday after drawing his salary. He has not ed office till Monday afternoon.”

Trashing the claim of the workers and family members of Mehedi, he said: “Mehedi had a dispute with Nazim and the authority sacked Nazim. But, the claim of murder is not true.”

“Many workers make excuses and escape their duties after getting their salaries.”

Gazipur Industrial police Inspector Nazrul Islam said: “The workers staged demonstration and vandalised the factory around 8am. They threw bricks on police as police tried to stop them.”

“Later, police charged baton and dispersed the workers from the factory premises. The situation is under control now. The factory authority has closed the factory for Monday.”

No report of filing any case over the missing incident, has been heard till filing the news at 7pm on Monday.
