The operation for detecting the Pinak 6 has been declared to be over, eight days after the launch capsized in the Padma river with over 250 passengers aboard.
Saiful Hasan Badol, deputy commissioner of Munshiganj, announced the closure of the search operation in a press conference on Monday morning.
"Considering the adverse situation of the Padma river, we have come to the decision that there is no necessity of continuing the search operation to detect the capsized launch," said the DC.
The DC, however, said other activities such as recovery of bodies in the river would be continued.
"We have tried our best to rescue the capsized launch. But, the rescue operation was hampered because of strong current and wave of Padma," he added.
Rescue vessel Rustom or Nirvik will remain on standby at Mawa, said the DC.
A total of 46 bodies have been recovered so far. Of them, 28 were identified, 18 could not be identified and 17 were buried.
On Saturday, rescue vessel Kandari 2 detected a metallic object, which is much similar to capsized Pinak 6, under water of the Padma river near Mawa.
But, the rescuers could not be confirmed whether it was of the remains of the capsized launch.
Double-decker Pinak 6 sank in the river in Louhajang upazila of Munshiganj with more than 250 people on its way to Mawa ghat from Kawrakandi terminal on Monday morning.
