BGMEA: No effect of strike in RMG factories

The authority of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said the dawn-to-dusk strike at all garment factories across the country has “failed to create any impact” on the regular work flow.

BGMEA Senior Additional Secretary (Crisis Management Cell) Monsur Khaled told the Dhaka Tribune: “We have monitored the situation in some 30 places, including Savar and Gazipur. According to the report, the factories have been apparently unaffected by a strike.”

“Workers of all RMG factories have joined their works as per regular schedule. The call of strike failed to attract workers of other factories as the Tuba Group Sramik Sangram Parishad called it to press-home their five-point demand, which did not include any general issue.”

Our correspondents from different parts of Dhaka, Savar and Gazipur reported that works of different RMG factories joined their works on Saturday morning.

No report of unrest has been filed till filing the report at 1:45pm.

Earlier, Sangram Parishad, a combine of 15 garment workers’ rights bodies, announced the strike on Thursday and also demanded immediate payment of Eid bonus, overdue wages of Tuba Group workers and cancellation of the bail the High Court granted to Delowar Hossain, owner of the group.

To press home their demands, they staged demonstrations in the garment belt on Friday.

The workers of five factories of Tuba group had been staging a hunger strike for nearly two weeks, demanding their dues. A number of organisations joined the agitation.

Later, the BGMEA authority have paid their dues of two months. But, the workers leaders decided to continue the demonstration until they get the dues of three months.
