The United States would prefer an alternative to death penalty for war criminals, Law Minister Anisul Huq has said.
“But they do not have any objection in regards to the committed crime being appropriate for the punishment,” the minister noted.
He said: “Remarkable change has been noticed regarding the US' opinion of the wartime crimes trial.”
Anisul talked to the reporters after holding a meeting with visiting US ambassador at-large for war crimes issues, Stephen J Rapp, at the secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.
The minister said: “Initiatives have been taken to amend the International Crimes Tribunal law and now the organisations can also be tried under it.”
“Details regarding it cannot be disclosed until it's draft is presented in the cabinet meeting,” he added.
Talking about Justice impeachment, Anisul said: “The impeachment of the justices cannot be done under the National Parliament until the constitution is amended and the impeachment should be done under it.”
The minister also said the impeachment of the justices are done under the National Parliament in other countries.
