University teachers observe token hunger strike

The teachers of five universities and members of leftist organisations have observed a token hunger strike on Oporajeyo Bangla premises demanding immediate payment of the dues of Tuba Group workers.

Teachers of Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Jagannath University, Kushtia Islami University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), University of Asia Pacific and members of leftist organisations began the strike around 11am on Tuesday.

The teachers and members of the organisations expressed their solidarity with the five-point demands of Tuba Group workers during the token hunger strike which is to end around 3pm.

They also sought maximum punishment of Tuba Group Managing Director Delwar Hossain.

On the other hand, the agitated workers of Tuba Group laid siege to the BGMEA building around 11:50am to press home their demands.

Their demands include immediate payment of the outstanding wages, bonuses and overtime dues of 1,600 workers, job security for all workers of the Tuba Group, keeping all the factories operational, scrapping of Delwar’s bail, and compensation for those who died in the Tazreen Fashion fire and the treatment cost for those injured in the fire.

On Sunday, the workers vowed to continue their fast-unto-death until their demands were met, rejecting Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association’s (BGMEA) proposal of two month’s wages to be paid on Wednesday.
