Athletes continue to disappoint

Mezbah Ahmed, the fastest sprinter of Bangladesh, was disqualified in heat 10 of the 200m in the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland on Wednesday. Qazi Syque Caeser, the USA-based Bangladesh gymnast also failed to live upto expectations finishing 27th in the 32-man final list of the artistic gymnastics.

Mezbah was disqualified for a false start and there were seven sprinters in the last heat of the 200m. Meanwhile, Shirin Akhter, the fastest woman of the country, also participated in the 200m heat and finished seventh among seven sprinters in heat 3 with a timing of 26.41s.

Aiman Ibne Zaman, the 17-year old Bangladeshi shuttler, won his round of 64 match against W. Tukre of Uganda by 21-11, 21-11 points but in the round of 32 Aiman lost to Singapore’s C. Huang 21-7, 21-7 to be eliminated.

In the men’s doubles event later in the day, Bangladesh pair Aiman and Mohammed Haque lost to R. Tam and Glenn Warfe of Australia 21-8, 21-8.

The two Bangladeshi wrestlers, Dipu Ray and Billal Hossain competing in the 74- and 97-kg category both lost their matches. Dipu lost to Tommy Hawthorn of England by 4-0 points while Billal lost to Sam Belkin of New Zealand by 5-0 points.

Meanwhile in table tennis, Bangladesh champion Manash Chowdhury beat P.M. Mutamduze of Uganda and A. Rosteur of Tuvalu in the group stages but lost to Mas Shakirin of Malaysia in the final game of the first round. Mahbub Billah beat S. Kalaluka of Zambia in his first match but lost to Marius Viangov of Cyprus in the next. Javed Ahmed, another Bangladeshi table tennis player lost to E. Comney of Ghana by 4-0 and B. Chan Yook of Mauritius by 4-3 games. In the team event, Bangladesh went down to Guyana, Jamaica and Nigeria by 3-0 margins, lost to Mauritius by 3-2 margin with the only win registered against Kiribati by 3-1 points. Manash and Javed featured for Bangladesh in the team event.

Qazi Syque Caeser accumulated 71.398 points in artistic gymnastics. He competed in the events Pommel Horse (10.166), Rings (10.600), Floor Exercise (13.233), Parallel Bars (14.133), Vault (13.333) and Horizontal Bars (9.933). He was not placed in the first twenty finishers in all the events apart from the Parallel Bars where he was positioned 10th among the 48 participants. Caeser also represented Bangladesh in the 2012 London Olympics but performed below par as he was recovering from an injury during that time.
