Physician beaten up

A doctor was beaten with shoes yesterday for refusing to visit local Awami League leader’s place in Nokla upazila, Sherpur.

Dr Emran Hossain of Nokla Upazila Health Complex was beaten by Touhid, younger brother of Sarwar Hossain Talukdar, upazila vice-chairman and chairman of Jatiya Sramik League’s upazila unit, and Nur-e-Alam, a local Awami League leader and chairman of Urfa union.

Sources said Touhid went to the health complex around 12pm and asked Dr Emran to go to his home with him and attend his ailing father.

As the doctor refused, Touhid left and returned with a few men, and they punched and beat him with shoes.

Later, police arrived and brought the situation under control.

Emran said: “I have informed the higher authorities about the matter, including Upazila Civil Surgeon Narayan Chandra Dey. He said steps would be taken in this regard.”

Confirming the matter, Golam Hayder, officer-in-charge of Nokla police station, said the situation was under control now, but no steps could be taken until a written complaint was filed.

When contacted, Touhid said: “I did not beat him; people did because there are several allegations of irregularities against him. I was standing at the gate of the hospital when the incident took place.”
