The prime accused in police officer Nurul Islam murder case has been killed in a “gunfight” with law enforcers in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail early Monday.
The deceased is Nur Islam alias Ulka, Tangail Model police station Officer-in-Charge Akhtaruzzaman has told the Dhaka Tribune.
On Friday, Tangail Sadar police station Sub-Inspector Nurul Islam was shot while he was conducting a drive at East Adalatpara in the town to arrest an alleged terrorist Nur Islam alias Ulka.
Sensing police presence, Ulka escaped by shooting at police.
At that time, ASI Nurul Islam sustained two rounds of bullet injuries to his chest and one round of bullet to his hand.
Later, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.
A case was filed with Tangail model police station accusing Ulka and his cohorts.
Police, in an overnight drive on Friday, arrested four persons in this connection.
On Sunday night, police, acting on a tip-off, launched a drive at the house of Azizur Rahman Babu at South Kathia Kadma Gonapara village under Tarafpur union in the upazila to arrest Ulka.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Ulka and his associates opened fire at them that triggered a gunfight.
At one stage, Ulka came in the line of fire and died on the spot, the OC said.
Ulka’s two associates – Shahed, son of Zahirul Islam of Tangail Sadar upazila and Sagor alias Dollar, son of Abu Taleb, also sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight, he said.
Shahed who was hit by a bullet in his eye and Sagor in his leg were rushed to Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital in a critical condition.
Police recovered two foreign-made pistols from the spot.
Six cases were filed against Ulka, police said.
