The fastest man of Bangladesh, Mezbah Ahmed, crashed out from the heats in the men’s 100m sprint of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games at the Hampden Park stadium yesterday.
The juvenile athlete clocked 11.13s to touch the finishing line and was placed sixth out of seven in the opening heats. Mezbah, the 19-year old lad from Bagerhat who began his career in BKSP, ran along with Jamaican Olympic gold-winning athlete Kemar Bailey-Cole who finished first in the same heats.
It was Mezbah’s personal best timing in electronic time but he retained his title as the fastest man of the country in the 100m sprint in the 38th National Athletics Championship in March this year. He clocked the fastest time in recent years, 10.52s (hand timing) and also broke his own personal record to clinch first spot.
Bangladeshi swimmer Mahfuza Khatun went close before failing to qualify for the finals of the women’s 100m breaststroke event as she finished third in heat 1. Mahfuza took 1:22.62m to touch the finishing line.
Meanwhile in weightlifting, Monoranjan Roy of Bangladesh finished fifth out of 17 participants in the men’s 77kg Group C event. Monoranjan lifted a total of 265kg, 120kg in snatch and 145kg in clean and jerk.
Shooter Abdullah Hel Baki has so far earned Bangladesh their only medal in the 20th Commonwealth Games after he clinched silver in the men’s 10m air-rifle event at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre on Friday.
