Baby Moudud passes away

Eminent journalist and former lawmaker Baby Moudud died at a city hospital on Friday afternoon.

Family sources said Baby Moudud breathed her last at the United Hospital around 3pm, BSS reported.

The veteran journalist had been suffering from cancer. She left behind two sons and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn her death.

Her first Namaz-e-Janaza will be held at Eidgah ground at Dhanmondi after Isha prayers and she will be buried at Banani graveyard after her second Namaz-e-Janaza at the Jatiya Press Club at 9pm.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Baby Moudud.

Baby Moudud was born in Kolkata on July 23 in 1948. She obtained her honours degree in Bangla from Dhaka University in 1970 and masters from the same department of the university in 1971. She began her career as a journalist in 1967 and worked for the daily Sangbad, the daily Ittefaq, the Azad, daily Gonobangla, the daily Muktakantha and BBC. During her long journalistic carrier, Baby Moudud served as the head of Bangla Service of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS). She was also acting editor of Saptahik Bichitra. Before her death, she was the social affairs editor of online news portal bdnews24.com. Baby Moudud was elected as a member of parliament from women's reserve seat in the ninth parliament on Awami League nomination.
