Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) has temporary cancelled the registration of Dr Shafiul Azam of ZH Sikder Women’s Medical College and Hospital on charge of assaulting a special correspondent of Prothom Alo. His registration number was 21933.
BMDC Registrar Dr ZH Boshunia confirmed the decision yesterday, three days after the Executive Committee of BMDC took the decision on Monday.
Earlier BMDC and Health Ministry had formed separate committees to investigate the incident. Both of the probe committees found Dr Shafiul guilty and proposed a cancellation of his BMDC registration temporarily.
With this decision he lost the right to practice in Bangladesh.
It was learnt that this is the second record of cancellation of registration of a doctor. Earlier in 1980’s, a doctor named Arun Jyoti Chakma’s registration was cancelled.
On May 13 this year Shishir Morol went to ZH Sikder Women’s Medical College and Hospital to investigate an allegation against Dr Shafiul Azam. There, Shafiul and his associates assaulted him. They also confined him in a room for two and half hours and beat him up severely.
Shafiul, assistant professor at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, was working full-time at ZH Sikder Women’s Medical College and Hospital without taking leave from CMCH.
After that incident the authority of Sikder Medical College had suspended Shafiul.
