Show cause notices against 3 R&H engineers

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader has ordered the ministry to issue show cause notices against three engineers of Roads and Highways Department for their negligence of duty in completing the repair work of Jessore-Khulna highway ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.

The engineers are Kazi Muhammad Ali, additional chief engineer of Roads and Highways Department, Khulna Region, Fakir Abdur Rouf, overseer engineer of Jessore road circle and Ziaur Haider, executive engineer of Jessore road circle.

While visiting the Jessore-Khulna highway on Wednesday, the minister found the highway unfit for traffic movement and asked the communications secretary to serve show cause notices against them, says Communications Ministry Public Relations official Sheikh Walid Foyez.

Obaidul Quader ordered executive engineers of Kushtia and Satkhira R&H Department to complete the repair work within three days.

Earlier, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader vowed to repair all highways across the country by July 20 to ease the sufferings of home-bound passengers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

However, about 40 kilometres of the Jessore-Khulna highway is still in dire need of repair.

Local sources said commuters had to suffer needlessly while traveling through the highway.

A large portion of the highway is severely accident prone as numerous potholes have recently appeared because of the monsoon rains.

According to a recent survey conducted by the Roads and Highway Department around 41% of roads and highways across the country are in a dilapidated state. Of them, 12% are severely run-down.

Earlier, transport leaders in Chittagong threatened to stop plying vehicles in the district ahead of Eid, if the authorities concerned failed to repair the appalling roads by July 14.
