Minister: PM's Britain visit very significant

The visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Britain is very significant as this is her first visit to any western country after the January 5 election, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali has said.

The minister made the statement in a press conference at his office on Sunday afternoon.

“The meeting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her British counterpart David Cameron will be very significant and we hope that all bilateral issues will be discussed there,”he said.

British Prime Minister David Cameron invited Hasina to attend Girls Summit on July 22. Sheikh Hasina will leave for Britain on Monday.

The invitation of David Cameron is considered significant as the British government along with other governments of the western countries criticised the Awami League government for its one-sided election on January 5.

“During the visit, the prime minister will have a bilateral meeting with her British counterpart at 10 Downing Street,” the minister said.

After the January 5 election, this is the first time Haisna is having a meeting with a top leader of any western country, Mahmood said.

When asked if politics and governance are to be discussed in the meeting, he said: “Let’s have the discussion then we will let you know about it.”

The minister declined to make any comment when asked whether Bangladesh would raise the issue of deporting BNP leader Tarique Zia from London.

Tarique Zia, son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, has been residing in London since 2008. He has now gone to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah and meet his mother.
