A DNA test of the samples found from 29 pieces of human limbs at the Matuail landfill in the capital did not match that of any Rana Plaza victim.
The human remains at the landfill were recovered on June 23 last year.
The national DNA profiling laboratory at Dhaka Medical College Hospital submitted the detailed findings of the test before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court on June 26 the same year and the samples were sent to the laboratory on September 15.
Dr Sharif Akteruzzaman, head of the laboratory, told the Dhaka Tribune that it was suspected that the recovered remains were those of Rana Plaza victims.
“But we did not find any matches,” he said.
The doctor, however, refused to disclose the specific number of DNA profiles found in the test.
Police, court and laboratory sources said among the 29 pieces, complete DNAs of two males and one female were found. The test also found mixed DNAs (both male and female) of five people.
Kazi Jashimuddin, an investigating officer and a sub-inspector of Jatrabari police station, told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday that he had learnt about the recent submission of the test report before court.
“Forensic doctors at Sir Salimullah Medical College sent the samples to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for testing. The doctors will get a copy of the test report and will then make the final recommendation in the autopsy report. We will take further steps after receiving the report,” he said.
On June 23, police recovered several human limbs inside seven sacks at a dumping site in Matuail. Some street children discovered the sacks and told city corporation officials, who then informed police.
Police recovered seven legs, five arms, parts of two heads and 13 bones from inside the sacks. The remains are believed to belong to at least four people.
Seeking anonymity, police and DNA lab officials told the Dhaka Tribune the remains found in Matuail were either dumped by criminals after murdering the people or came from hospitals or anatomy departments of medical schools.
“Some of the bones were screwed and wired together. It will be tough to identify the victims,” they added.
