At least six people were killed and 35 others injured in a road accident yesterday afternoon in Ghatakchar Bazar area of Madaripur Sadar upazila.
The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.
Madaripur Police Super Khandakar Faridul Islam said the accident had taken place around 12:30pm when a Dhaka-bound Sugandha Paribahan bus from Barguna crashed into a tree when the driver lost control over the steering, leaving six of the people spot dead and 35 others injured.
Upon receiving information, firefighters rushed to the spot and rescued the injured people and also recovered the bodies.
The injured were rushed to Madaripur Sadar Hospital and the bodies to taken to the morgue for postmortem examinations, he said.
Later, people, who were critically injured, were shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Salma Begum, who was injured in the accident and was undergoing treatment at Madaripur Sadar Hospital, said the accident had taken place because the driver was talking on his mobile phone.
A tailback stretching two kilometres has created as a result of the road accident.
Later, police and RAB personnel rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Madaripur district administration announced that it would provide Tk10,000 to each of the families of the deceased and each injured person would get Tk5,000.
Our Tangail correspondent adds: one passenger was killed in a road accident yesterday in sadar upazila of the district.
The deceased was Ratan Mia, 35, the son of Gendu Mia of Chamta village in Karimganj upazila.
Police said a speeding truck hit an auto rickshaw from the back, leaving four of them injured. Ratan was rushed to Kishoreganj Adhunik Sadar hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
