Customs officials have seized 119 bars of smuggled gold weighing to around 14kg at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday afternoon.
They also arrested seven alleged members of a gang involved in smuggling of the gold worth around Tk7 crore.
The detained persons were identified as Md Jasim Uddin, Amir Hossain, Rashed Chowdhury, Md Nazim Uddin, Salauddin Ahmed, Lokman Bhuiyan and Anwar Hossain.
Hossain Ahmed, Commissioner of Customs Department at the airport, said: “The gold bars have been smuggled into the country from Dubai on a flight of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines by some members of a gang of smugglers."
The gang members got out of the flight at Sylhet airport by handing over the smuggled gold to those seven persons staying inside the flight, he added.
The flight of the national flag carrying airlines arrived at Dhaka airport around 1pm.
“Although all the seven persons hail from Chittagong, they had boarded on the flight as domestic passengers and arrived at Dhaka from Sylhet just for carrying the smuggled gold by dodging the eyes of the intelligence,” the customs commissioner said.
He also said since they had intelligence on the arrival of the smuggled gold, they searched those seven persons and found the 119 gold bars in their bodies and luggage.
