Locals observe strike for Friday bus accident

Tension ran high at Ichhladi under Wajirpur police station of Barisal district following an accident on Friday that killed 11 people.

Locals at Ichhladi market observed a strike yesterday demanding the punishment to staff and owner of the bus that ploughed through the market.

Anwar Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Wazirpur police station, said the number of death was 11.

Gournadi highway police station filed a case in Wazirpur police station against the unnamed driver of Hanif Paribahan for killing and injuring people by reckless driving.

The OC of Wajirpur police station also said police is trying to nab the accused driver. Shops at Ichhladi bazaar were closed till 2:00 PM observing strike.

Highway was opened under police protection from about 10pm on Friday, but vehicular movement was limited due to the tensed situation in that area.

Jasimuddin, president of the Ichhladi bazaar businessmen association, demanded construction of more speed breakers, compensations for the dead and injured in the accident, and punishment of the driver, staffs, and owners of the bus.

Per head Tk 5,000 for injured, and Tk 10,000 for each of the dead victims were sanctioned by the district administration for treatment and burial costing, said Sadikur Rahman, nejarat deputy collector of Barisal.

Sources from Barisal Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital said 5 critically injured patients were referred to Dhaka for better treatment. Among the 11 dead men two died on the spot, Seven  died at SBMCH, and two died at Wazirpur upazila health complex.

A coach of Hanif Paribahon, plying on Dhaka-Barisal route, plunged into roadside bazaar due to a break-failure and smashed shops, small vehicles, pedestrians before stopping at a roadside slope near Ichhladi toll plaza around 6pm on Friday

Police with the help of local people ran the rescue operation.
