Over 10 lakh new voters enrolled in 144 upazilas

More than 10.32 lakh people were registered as new voters in 144 upazilas as of Wednesday during the countrywide voter list updating campaign, according to the Election Commission.

The data showed an increase of 2.72% male voters and 2.06% female voters so far, a press release issued by the commission stated. The assessment was revealed in a commission meeting at the EC Secretariat in the capital yesterday with Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad in the chair.

The EC started the electoral roll updating programme on May 15 and will continue through November 15 in three phases.

Data of citizens eligible to be voters have already been collected in the first two phases from 400 upazilas. Currently, photographs and registration details are being taken at the centres.

In the third phase, data collection will start on September 1 and continue till September 10 in 120 upazilas. Photographing and registration will continue from September 18 to November 15, EC officials said.

The commission last updated the voter list in 2012. There are more than 9.21 crores voters in the country at this time. The EC expects to bring 46 lakh new voters on to the electoral roll.
