A Khulna court yesterday granted bail to a Northern University Bangladesh teacher after quashing an interim bail plea in a defamation case filed for allegedly making derogatory comments in the classroom about the father of the nation, the prime minister, the president and the war crimes trials.
Khulna’s Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court passed the order after Rajib Hasnat Shakil, an assistant teacher of NUB’s law department, had appeared before it and pleaded for bail.
Defence lawyer Zillur Rahman cited in the bail plea that the case had been filed under section 16 (2) of the Special Powers Act which is bailable. He also claimed that Rajib had never made the alleged remarks.
The court on July 8 rejected another bail plea and sent the accused teacher to jail. He was arrested on July 3, the day the case was filed by the police.
Meanwhile, Maruf Ahmed, the OC of Sonadanga model police station and investigation officer of the case, yesterday submitted to the court the police report in the case.
He said they had not found authenticity of the allegations, and that a student of the department, Nayeem, was among the masterminds who had spread rumours about Rajib to bring themselves into limelight.
