Medicines worth Tk2 crore seized at Shahjalal

A huge cache of sedative and pain killer medicines made by Pakistan have been seized at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday night.

Personnel from the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CII) said the medicines contained into two luggage have been seized at around 8:30pm.

“The medicines have been seized at an abandoned state as no owner of the smuggled goods was found”, said Ayesha Akhter, an assistant commissioner at the CIID at the airport.

She said acting on a tip-off, the CIID personnel searched the luggage and found the huge haul of the smuggled medicines.

“Investigation to find out the persons was on”, she said.

The haul of the Pakistan made medicines has been seized hours after a fake medicine factory was busted at the capital’s Topkhana Road by a mobile court that also seized and destroyed adulterated medicines worth Tk20 lakh and jailed the factory owners for two years along with an amount of Tk1 lkah as fine.

Airports in Bangladesh are widely used by the rings used to smuggling of gold, currencies, and medicines and various precious metals, stones and electronics goods in support with a section of officials and employees of different government and non-government agencies at the airport.
