UN peace-keepers get pay hike

The United Nations has decided to increase the pay scale of its peace-keepers under a staggered four-year plan.

Sources at the Foreign Ministry yesterday told the Dhaka Tribune that the fifth committee of the UN had approved the plan, which would be approved in the next general assembly.

A peace-keeper, who now draws a monthly salary of $1,028, will earn $1,322 in the first year under the new plan.

The pay would ultimately stand at $1,410 in the fourth year, said an official of the Foreign Ministry.

The new pay scale was reached through a hectic negotiation between the UN and the donors as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had proposed a hike to $1,762 and the donors saying they were ready to pay $1,250.

After the tenure of the plan, further negotiations would take place, said ministry officials.
