The High Court has ruled that no battery-driven rickshaw could ply in the Dhaka and Chittagong city corporations.
A HC bench comprising of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Khurshid Alam Sarkar passed the verdict on Thursday afternoon.
The bench passed the verdict after rejecting four writ petitions that sought the High Court's direction to the city corporations authorities for giving licence to battery-driven rickshaws to ply on the roads.
Ruhul Quddus Kazal, lawyer of Dhaka City Corposations, told the Dhaka Tribune: “As there is no scope to give licence to such rickshaws under relevant law, the court has rejected the pleas.”
Various organisations of such rickshaw drivers gave application to the city corporation authorities for licence but their applications were rejected which prompted them to file separate writ petitions with the High Court.
The court earlier had issued ruling in this regard.
However, after hearing both the sides over the ruling, the bench led by Justice Mirza Hussain Haider rejected the petitions.
