Ramadan begins on Monday

The month of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, is to begin on Monday in Bangladesh, as the new moon was not sighted on Saturday.

The National Moon Sighting Committee made the announcement on Saturday evening.

The committee said no report of a sighting of the new moon was received from the various moon sighting committees across the country.

The beginning of the month depends on the first sighting of the crescent moon. As the Islamic lunar year is 354 or 355 days long, Ramadan starts approximately 10 days earlier in each Gregorian year.

Ramadan is set to begin in Middle East countries on Sunday, as nobody sighted the new crescent on Friday.

The global leaders and political parties congratulated Muslims all over the world on the advent of Ramadan, and hoped it would strengthen their unity and improve relations among them.

Muslims around the world greet Ramadan with utmost respect and happiness. It is a religious obligation for Muslims to fast in this month.
