Rain results in low voter turnout in N'ganj port area

The voter turnout in port area has been low due to the torrential rain in the district of Narayanganj on Thursday.

The voting of Narayanganj 5 by-polls began at 8am and will continue till 4pm without any break.

The polling centres were almost empty during the early hours of voting due to the rain.

However, the voters were seen to enter the polling centres when the rain stopped around 10:30am.

Utom Kumar Roy, presiding officer of Bondor Girls’ School and College, said: “A total of 27 votes were cast in the two hours of the polling. The voter turnout might be low because of the rain and yesterday's [Wednesday] football match; it will increase with the course of the day.”

He said the turnout of female voters is more than that of male voters.

West Bondor Government Primary School Presiding officer said out of the 2416 voters, around 152 votes were cast till 11am.

Voter Shilpi Rani Shah said: “I have cast my vote freely without any hindrance but the voter turnout is very low.”

Akram Government Primary School Presiding Officer Pliton Kanti Bhowmik said: “Around 190 votes were cast out of the 3704 voters in the area.”
