A 50-kilometre tailback has been created on Dhaka-Chittagong highway due to the torrential rainfall.
The tailback occurred on the road in between Shitakunda and Mirsarai upazilas since the early hours of Friday.
Syed Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bar Aulia highway police outpost, said: “The traffic congestion has been created due to the excessive downpour that forced lorries and goods-laden trucks to slow down their speed.”
“The gridlock has started to ease slightly,” he said.
The heavy downpour has inundated Halishahar, Muradpur, Prabartak, Sholashahar, Bakalia, Badurtala, Rahattarpul, Kapasgola, Chawk Bazar, Alfala Goli, and Agrabad areas of the port city.
The vehicular movement in these areas have been severely restricted causing sufferings to the city dwellers.
According to the met office, 326.2 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in the city since Thursday afternoon.
