Heavy rain cripples Chittagong

The torrential rainfall has submerged many areas of Chittagong city in knee-deep to waist-deep water causing misery for locals.

The heavy downpour has inundated Halishahar, Muradpur, Prabartak, Sholashahar, Bakalia, Badurtala, Rahattarpul, Kapasgola, Chawk Bazar, Alfala Goli, and Agrabad areas.

The vehicular movement in these areas have been severely restricted causing sufferings to the city dwellers.

One Shamim Hasan, of Agrabad area, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The Incessant rains starting Thursday waterlogged many parts of the city, disrupting city life and causing immense sufferings to its dwellers, especially for the office-goers.”

According to the met office, 326.2 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in the city since Thursday afternoon.

Visiting these areas in the morning, the Dhaka Tribune has witnessed rainwater flooding kitchen markets, slums and the ground floors of most buildings and markets. Many vehicles were found stranded on waterlogged roads while people were seen struggling to find transport.

Biswajit Chowdhury, an official of Potenga met office, said: “The downpour that began on Thursday due to a monsoon wind in the Bay might continue for the next two days.”

Meanwhile, the maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Mongla have been advised to hoist local cautionary signal number 3.
