'Bangladesh wants trial for BGB Nayek Mizan murder'

Bangladesh has asked the authorities in Myanmar to take action against the men who killed BGB Nayek Md Mizanur Rahman on May 28.

Border Guard Bangladesh Director General, Major General Azizul Islam, made the disclosure at a press conference on Thursday.

“We strongly protested it [the incident] and we expect that Myanmar authorities find out who did this and take appropriate action against them,” he said.

The director general of the border force visited Myanmar from June 10-12 and had official talks with Myanmar Police chief to discuss problems related to the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

The visit of the BGB DG marks the first time that two high ranking border force officers from the countries have met. Aziz led a eight-member team while his counterpart Zaw Win, chief of Myanmar Police, led a 13-member delegation.

Aziz said during the discussion that the Myanmar side insisted that Mizan was 80 metres inside their territory when the incident occurred.

“We strongly protested it and told them it happened in Bangladesh. We collected blood from the crime scene in Bangladesh which proved that the incident took place within our borders,” he said.

However, he said in every meeting he had with the Myanmar authorities, they all expressed their apologies for the incident. "They will take necessary actions to ensure that such incident does not occur again.

Mizanur Rahman was killed and two other BGB personnel went missing on May 30 during an exchange of bullets between the border troopers of Bangladesh and Myanmar.
