Businessman dies in police custody

A Businessman has died in police custody after a team of Panchlish police station picked him up from the Panchlish area of the city early Thursday.

The deceased, M Rokunuzzaman, was a local businessman.

Family members said a team of police picked him up from his city house around 12:30am saying that a rape case has been filed against him.

Later, the family members received a call from Chittagong Medical College Hospital in the morning. Receiving the call, Rokun's family members rushed to the hospital and found him dead.

Rokun's wife claimed that police beat Rakun to death and left his body at the hospital morgue.

While contacted, Panchlish police station Officer-in-Charge Abu Zafar Md Omar Faruk said: “Police arrested him in a rape case. He suddenly fell sick inside the police vehicle before being taken to police station.

He was rushed to the hospital immediately after his condition deteriorated. Later, he died while undergoing treatment,” he added.
