24 activists of Islami Chhatri Sangstha held

At least 24 leaders and activists of different wings of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami were arrested on Wednesday while they were holding a secret meeting at a flat at Goran of the capital’s Khilgaon.

Huge quantities of various publications were also seized from their possessions, said Mohd Ashrafuzzaman, Deputy Commissioner of Police at Motijheel Division.

Police and locals said on information of police presence, a large number of other participants at the meeting fled away before police entered the building.

Inspector Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Khilgaon police station, said aged between 20 to 30 years old, the women leaders and activists of ‘Islami Chhatri Songha’ and ‘Islami Chhatri Songstha’ were arrested at a flat of an apartment building named ‘Sky View’ for holding a secret meeting.

“Acting on a tip-off holding the secret meeting, we had entered the building at around 3.30pm and they were taken to the police station at around 7:00pm,” said the OC.

The OC said during the search at the apartment, various publications containing anti-government statements were also recovered from their possessions.

Asked, the OC said all the detained women were the students of different colleges, universities and other educational institutions.

“So far we have gathered information about the detained women, they are the activists of different wings of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir,” said OC Sirajul Islam.

“The detained women are involved in anti-government activities through provocation.”

Process of filing cases against all the detained women was on, said the OC.
