The half day hartal enforced by the Islamic Chhatra Shibir protesting the attack on a Shibir leader of Rajshahi University (RU) unit passed off peacefully in Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Natore yesterday.
Police picked up 13 Shibir men from different parts of Rajshahi city.
CNG-run three wheelers, tempos were seen plying on the city streets while rickshaws and three-wheelers have dominated the roads.
But no long-route buses were seen to enter or leave the city.
Local sources said Shibir men tried to put up barricade on road setting fire in Aktroy area around 10:30am, but they left the place sensing the presence of law enforcers.
Police prevented hartal supporters from bringing out a procession in Debisingpara area around 6am.
Most of the shops, shopping malls, business and educational institutes were open.
Train movement was normal and Dhaka-bound Silkcity and Khulna-bound Kapotaksha inter-city trains left Rajshahi railway station on scheduled time.
No classes and examinations were held at the University while a tense situation was prevailing among the students followed by the Monday’s incident.
Tanvir Haidar Chowdhury, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police, said additional law enforcers had been deployed at the key points of the city to avoid any untoward incident.
Earlier on Monday, Shibir called the hartal in three districts, protesting the attack on Russell Mahmud, secretary of RU Nawab Abdul Latif Hall unit of Shibir and a 4th year student of Finance and Banking Department of the university.
Russell Mahmud was allegedly shot by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men after chopping off one of his legs on the campus.
But police are yet to arrest anyone in this connection.
Officer-in-Charge of Motihar police station Alamgir Hossain told Dhaka Tribune that people who attacked Rasel were yet to be identified and no case had been filed over the incident.
Police was trying to nab the people involved in the incident.
Rasel was shown arrest in two cases filed by BCL RU unit followed by the attack on two BCL leaders Togar Mohammad Saleh and Abdullah Al Masud on May 29 this year, said the OC, adding Rasel was undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital under police custody.
Organising Secretary RU unit Shibir Shoyeb Shahria alleged that though BCL men attacked Rasel and cut off his leg in presence of police and huge witnesses, police were yet to take action against the fugitive BCL men.
He demanded arrest of attackers without any delay.
However, the Bangladesh Chhatra Federation RU unit in press release condemned the attack of Chhatra league. They also said, the students of the university now are not safe for the criminal activities of BCL activists and they urged the university authorities to take stern action against the responsible BCL men and to take necessary measures to ensure safety of the general students.
