The contract for constructing the Padma Bridge has been signed with Chinese construction company China Major Bridge Engineering Limited at a capital hotel on Tuesday evening.
The 48-month contract has been signed between the director of Padma Bridge Multipurpose Project Shafiqul Islam and China Major Bridge Engineering Limited Chairman Lieu Ziming at Ruposhi Bangla hotel in Dhaka at 7:30pm.
Communications Minister Obaidul Quader was present at the contract signing ceremony as the chief guest.

While addressing the programme, the minister said: “The government has finally become successful to sign the contract for building the much-talked-about Padma Bridge after a long struggle. We already have taken many effective steps in this regard and we will continue the effort in the future.”
Earlier on June 2, China Major Bridge Engineering Limited has got the work order of Padma Bridge.
On May 22, the cabinet committee on public purchase, approved the Chinese firm.
On May 11, 2010, the government floated the first tender for appointing the constructor of the Padma bridge in 2011.
However, the tender process was suspended in August 2011 following allegations of corruption conspiracies raised by World Bank.
The final tender was floated on June 26 last year and the China Major Bridge submitted its main financial offer on April 24 of this year.
The Chinese company has offered to build the Padma bridge at a cost of Tk12,133.39 crore – an increase of Tk3,006.22 crore from earlier.
