A local leader of the ruling Awami League in Madaripur has allegedly threatened Jaago, a volunteer organisation, as it did not recruit her nephew as project officer of the organisation.
Jaago General Secretary (wishes anonymity) got the call from Rehana Parveen Lipa, secretary of women's affairs of Awami League in Madaripur, on Sunday.
Korvi Rakshand, founder of Jaago, told the Dhaka Tribune that they did not recruit the Awami League leader's nephew Sabuz as he was not qualified for the post.
“Then Sabuz along with five other men came to the school on Sunday and forced the newly recruited officer Humayun Kabir to leave the premises,” Korvi said.
“They also threatened that no project officer can work there if Sabuz is not recruited. If needed, they will close down the school.”
Korvi alleged that the previous project officer left the job after receiving continuous threats from the same people.
He said they contacted with Mayor Yad Ali seeking help. The mayor was cordial and tried to mediate the matter.
When contacted, Lipa told the Dhaka Tribune that Jaago had taken recruitment tests for the Project Officer post. However, they postponed it and took fresh tests and appointed one having fake certificate.
“People in the area got angered towards Jaago following the recruitment and tension has been prevailing in the area,” she said.
She said The Jaago General Secretary had called her nephew seeking help to calm the situation. “Then I called the general secretary back and asked them to come in the area to resolve the matter holding discussion with the people.”
