The authorities of MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital has declared the college closed for a week following a indefinite strike waged by its students after a student and also a JCD leader was killed on the campus by miscreants.
The decision came from an emergency meeting of the academic council on Thursday afternoon, Professor Dr Murshed Ahmed Chowdhury, principal of the college, has told the Dhaka Tribune.
The college will remain closed till Thursday, he said.
A five-member probe body, headed by Professor Dr AKM Mosharraf Hossain of surgery department of the college, has been formed to investigate the killing of Tauhidul Islam, a fourth year student of MBBS 49th batch and JCD leader, he said.
The committee was asked to submit the report within a week.
The students who will be found involved in Tauhid killing incident will be expelled from the college, he told the Dhaka Tribune.
Anwar Hossain Matabbar, uncle of slain Tauhid has filed a case with Kotwali police station, Sylhet Metropolitan Police ADC and Media Wing Chief Md Rahmat Ullah said.
Some 10 members of ruling party’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has been mentioned in the case. Moreover, some 8-10 persons without mentioning names were included in the case, he said. Meanwhile, a CID team has visited the college.
Protesting the killing, Sylhet city BNP has called a half-day hartal in Sylhet for Sunday.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal unit of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College will observe a three-day condolence programme on the campus.
Moreover, the JCD has started an indefinite strike on the campus from Thursday morning protesting the killing.
The strike has started from 8am on Thursday, said Aslamul Rudra, president of Chhatra Dal unit of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College.
The first namaz-e-janaza of Touhid was held on the college premises around 10am, said Aslamul Rudra Dr Tanmoy Bhattacharia, deputy director of the medical college.
Tauhidul Islam, a fourth year student of MBBS 49th batch and also a JDC leader, was beaten to death by unidentified miscreants on Wednesday evening.
Later, Tauhidul succumbed to his injuries around 8pm, Dr Abdus Salam, assistant director of the hospital, endorsed the information in a press meet.
However, JCD leader Rudra claimed that BCL activists attacked Tauhid and beat him black and blue in Room No 1003 of Abu Sina Hall of the medical college.
