The readymade garments industry owners made a commitment to the government to pay their wages and bonuses before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr and to not retrench any workers before Eid to prevent labour unrest.
The owners made the commitment yesterday at a meeting of the crisis management core committee held at the conference room of the Ministry of Labour with the State Minister for Labour Mojibul Haque Chunnu in the chair.
After the meeting, Mojibul Haque Chunnu told the reporters that the industry owners have made their commitments in response to the urging of the government.
“It will help the government to maintain the law and order situation across the country during the Eid period, if the owners keep their commitment. However, the government will monitor the overall situation. The administration will take necessary steps, if it’s needed,” he said.
The state minister called upon the business leaders to update the list of unregistered factory owners and suggested that they hold meetings amongst themselves at regular intervals to resolve the crises that come up in this important sector.
Chunnu also said that Bangladesh had been elected to the deputy member’s post of the International Labour Organisation’s executive committee for the next three years as 23 votes were cast in our favour. “It will help the country to put better effort into protecting labour interests,” he said.
The ministry’s Acting Secretary Mojibur Rahman, Joint Secretary Faizur Rahman, Director General of the Department of Factories and Establishment Inspection Syed Ahmed, BGMEA Vice President Riaz Bin Mahmud, BKMEA Director Kamal Pasha and Jatiya Shramik League President Shukkur Mahmud attended the meeting, among others.
