Transport workers’ clash leaves Kurigram isolated

Road communication between Kurigram and the rest of the country came to a halt when the workers of Kurigram Motor Sramik Union blocked Kurigram-Rangpur road yesterday morning.

Passengers suffered as the road was abruptly blocked.

The blockade, which was imposed at 9:30am, stemmed from a row between Kurigram Motor Sramik Union and Rangpur Motor Sramik Union.

Labour leaders Jamal and Milon said Rangpur workers removed three seats from a Kurigram bus in Mirbagh on June 1 in the wake of an attempted overtaking on the Kurigram-Rangpur route.

The following day, Kurigram workers retaliated by removing two seats from a Rangpur bus, escalating the dispute which led to yesterday’s blockade.

Kurigram workers blocked roads by indiscriminately parking vehicles at the central bus terminal area yesterday because they were infuriated by the beating up of Shutku, the helper of a bus of Antar Paribahan in Kurigram.

Earlier, around 8am, Rangpur workers stopped the bus in Mirbagh and beat Shutku up.

Kurigram Motor Sramik Union General Secretary Abdul Karim Madhu said road communication with Kurigram from other parts of the country would remain suspended until the row was resolved.
