Confusing statements over withdrawal of CNG-auto strike

Different statements have been offered by the government and the owners' association on the prevailing strike of CNG-driven auto-rickshaws in Dhaka city.

However, it was uncertain on Tuesday night whether the plight of city dwellers had redeemed.

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Nazrul Islam said he was assured that the strike will be withdrawn from Tuesday night.

The comment was made in the evening after a meeting between BRTA, communications ministry, and Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation.

However, Dhaka city CNG-run Auto-Rickshaw Malik Samity Oikka Parishad, who enforced the strike, denied of any such promises to the government.

“The ministry did not contact us. They sat with one of our elder brothers. We have not suspended or withdrawn our strike,” president of the body Barkatullah Bulu said.

“Tomorrow the ministry might call us for a meeting. If our demand is met, we will withdraw the strike,” he said after being contacted by the Dhaka Tribune.

Dhaka city CNG-run Auto-Rickshaw Malik Samity Oikka Parishad enforced a strike from Tuesday morning suspending CNG-driven auto-rickshaws from plying.

The strike was decided in a meeting on Monday night demanding extension of the economic lifespan of CNG-driven autos by four more years from the existing 11 years.
