Graft cases to continue against Moudud, Mosharraf, Hashem

The Supreme Court on Wednesday paved the way for the continuance of trial proceedings against BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Partex Group Chairman MA Hashem, also an ex-MP of BNP, in separate corruption cases.

On the other hand, the apex court upheld the acquittal for Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, currently a member of the Awami League advisory council and a lawmaker, in another graft case.

A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain delivered the judegment in separate cases.

Earlier on September 16, 2007, the Anti Corruption Commission filed a case with Gulshan police station stating that Moudud had illegally acquired properties worth about Tk17.70crore as well as concealing an amount of about Tk4.5crore as his income.

Later, the former minister filed a petition under the Code of Criminal Procedure seeking annulment of the case which was turned down by the High Court on October 7, 2012.

On May 14, 2008, charge sheet was filed against Moudud with a lower court.

The anti-graft body lodged a corruption case of Tk15crore against Khandaker Mosharraf on January 10, 2008.

Charge sheet was placed against him on September 17 of the same year.

The BNP leader lodged a plea seeking cancellation of the case which was rejected by the High court on October 16, 2012.

ACC counsel Khurshid Alam Khan told the Dhaka Tribune that the two former ministers obtained stay orders over the High Court judgements but the Appellate Division dismissed their appeals on Wednesday.

The commission on December 5, 2007 filed a corruption case against MA Hashem and submitted charge sheet on September 30, 2008.

On January 19, 2012 the High Court quashed the case following a petition of him.

The apex court Wednesday set aside the High Court judgement allowing an appeal of the ACC.

The commission on March 6, 2007 filed a case accusing that MK Alamgir had illegally acquired wealth worth Tk3.27 crore.

On July 26 of the same year, a lower court jailed him for 13 years.

The High Court on July 23, 2009 canceled his punishment following an appeal by Alamgir.

On July 4, 2010, the Appellate Division upheld the High court judgement dismissing an appeal of ACC.

Later, the commission filed a petition to review the verdict which was disposed of with observation on Wednesday.

But the court did not disclose the observation which will be found after the release of full text of the judgement.
