Two people, including a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) have been drowned in Bangalee River at Sariakandi of the district on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Taj, first year student of Buet, and Rifat.
Sariakandi police station Sub-inspector Nayan told the Dhaka Tribune the bodies were handed over to their families.
Quoting locals, the SI said Taj along with his friends went to visit Rifat's grandmother's house at Sariakandi. Rifat slipped and drowned into the deep water in the river.
Taj and three others also drowned while trying to rescue Rifat, he added.
Taj, Babu, Shama and Rifat's sister Nadia were rushed to a local clinic where Taj succumbed.
