The attack on Humayun Azad was an attack against the liberation values, the independence of the country.
Those who were challenged by thoughts and works by the free thinker who always stood against the odds of the time and the adversaries of Bangladesh, launched attack on him, said the speakers at a discussion and culture programme at the seminar room in the Public Library in Dhaka University.
The speakers at the program also said without the lights that Humayun Azad bore, it is impossible to build a nation with the values of the blood-stained liberation war.
An organization, Chetonay Humayun Azad, organised the programme to comemorate and discuss the works of the prolific linguist, poet and writer, Professor Humayun Azad.
Professor Rafique Ullah Khan conducted the whole programe while Sultana Azim presided over the program.
In the program, Mohammad Abu Bakar Siddique presented an article on “The political thoughts of Humayun Azad.”
Dhaka University vice chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique said apart from being a man of honesty and truth, Humayun Azad possessed a sincere worry for the nation's well being.
He was keen on building the nation with the values of liberation, particularly a democratic one, AAMS Arefin Siddique said.
DU VC urged to the government to erect a sculpture on the spot where the militant-fundamentalists carried out the attack on him.
He also said Dhaka university would take initiatives to enhance studying Humayun Azad to spread his values, emphasizing on introducing more of his teaching in the curriculum and education.
Emeritus Professor Anisuzzam said Humayun Azad was extremely creative and meritorious which is evident in his various arrays of writing.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said: “It is often being said some misguided military men killed Bangandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. But, those who wanted to take revenge of the defeat in the liberation war, killed the father of the nation. Such evil persons killed another best son of the soil, Humayun Azad.”
Among others, poet Aseem Saha, Badrul Ahsan Khan addressed the program, alongside Shadat Hossain Nipu, Rezina Wali Lina recited at the programme.
Several artists sang in the program.
On February 27, 2004, he became the victim of a vicious assassination attempt by assailants near the campus of the University of Dhaka during way back home from Ekushe Boimela, the annual Bangla Academy book fair.
On August 11 in the same year, he was found dead in his apartment in Munich, Germany, where he had arrived a week earlier.
