Arzina Begum, a housewife in Dolapara village of Khokshabari union under Sadar upazila in Nilphamari district, has achieved self reliance rearing cattle in a very limited area around her house.
According to sources, a good number of women have taken short and long term training from the Department of Youth Development and Women Affairs to engage in income-generating activities.
Many women in Sadar, Dimla, Domar, Jaldhaka, Saidpur, Kishoreganj upazilas have been able to change their fate in the past few years by rearing livestock and poultry birds.
Besides, a good number of women could earn solvency by cultivating vegetable on their homestead.
Of them, Arzina has established herself successfully in her job to fight against poverty.
While contacted, Arzina said: “As I was fighting against poverty, I have taken a help of Tk 5,000 from the Muslim Aid Bangladesh and bought a cow."
"I started rearing poultry beside agriculture work and cultivation vegetable in my homestead garden," she said.
" Now the farm gives me profit Tk 1200 to Tk1500 a week, " she added.
"I have deposited a total amount of Tk. 3,00,000 to the local bank," Arzina said.
Mahfuzar Rahman, manager of the Muslim Aid UK Bangladesh, Nilphamari branch said:" When the organization was established in the area in 2005, many helpless women were given facilities like Arzina."
"The Muslim Aid Bangladesh is a UK based relief organization," he said.
Department of Agriculture Office Deputy Director SM Sirajul Islam said: " Like Arzina, there are a number of helpless women in different upazilas of the district who have achieved self-reliance by dint of their diligence and keen intelligence and living a decent life."
UP chairman Aminur Rahman said: " Arzina has achieved success through hard struggle."
"She is an example for the women in distress," said the chairman.
