US to talk to govt on violence, freedom of press

The United States will discuss on the issues of violence, extrajudicial killing and freedom of the press with Bangladesh government.

Marie Harf, deputy spokesperson of the US Department of State, has said this while speaking in a daily press briefing on Monday at Washington DC.

"We support freedom of expression, freedom of the media everywhere, including in Bangladesh, and it’s an issue we talk about all the time with the government," Harf  said  replying to a question – “What is the position of the State Department on this situation leading to the press as well as the extrajudicial killing?”

Harf also said that the opposition and civil society leaders have also responsibilities to hold the freedom of media.

Replying to another question over fresh election, Harf  said : “We want the tensions to ease” between the major opposition and the government of Bangladesh.

Regarding freedom of the press, she said: “Where we see freedom of the press in jeopardy, we obviously speak out against it.”
