Amu: Govt takes cognisance of allegations against RAB

The government has taken cognisance of the allegation brought against some members of Rapid Action Battalion for the abduction of seven people and killing them in Narayanganj, a cabinet minister says.

“If the allegation brought against the RAB members is proved, they would be brought to book,” Amir Hossain Amu, also chairman of the cabinet committee on law and order, told reporters after the committee’s meeting at the Home Ministry yesterday.

On April 27, seven people, including Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam and lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker, were abducted and later their bodies were recovered from the river Shitalakkhya.

Shahidul Islam, father-in-law of slain panel mayor Nazrul Islam, on Sunday alleged that RAB had abducted and killed his son-in-law along with others in exchange for Tk6 crore.

Amu, the industries minister, said the government had taken firm decision to identify the abductors and none would be spared. “I hope the real criminals would be identified soon. As the investigation is going on, I do not want to say anything more.”

He added: “We have reviewed the overall law and order situation across the country.”

Amu claimed that the opposition party was plotting to create anarchy in the country. Saying the opposition failed to foil the election, he added: “Being vindictive, now they are trying to create anarchy and we are fully aware of it,” he said.

An official who attended the meeting said a number of ministers pointed out that if the cause of the killing of Sagor-Runi and Twoki could be discovered, public opinion would go in favour of the government. He added that the ministers also blamed the Inspector General of Police for failure of police to find out the cause and arrest the criminals.

Sources said the law enforcement agencies had been asked to launch special drives to maintain law and order.
