The family members and relatives of Sirajul Islam, whose death sparked a protest at Birdem General Hospital, formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club demanding punishment for the doctors responsible for his death, yesterday.
At the human chain, Farhana Nasreen, the daughter of the deceased, claimed that her father met his tragic end due to the negligence of some on-duty, intern doctors at the hospital.
“Such incidents will continue to rise in the country if the responsible doctors are not punished,” she said.
She further added: “They killed my father by being negligent in his treatment. If the doctors were serious, then he would be home with us today.”
Addressing the prime minister and the health minister, Nasreen said: “I have lost my mother and father in a just span of 19 days. Then why are you taking side of the doctors and not ordering a neutral probe?”
At one stage, while recalling her father’s memory at the human chain, Nasreen fainted. Later, doctors at the press club provided her primary treatment. Doctors said she has been suffering from physical and mental weakness.
The human chain was formed for an hour from 11:00am, which was also attended by Press Club Employees’ Union president Rafiqul Islam, among others.
Earlier, at a press conference, Nasreen urged the prime minister to take steps to punish the doctors.
The death of Sirajul Islam, 57, raised an outcry among his relatives who allegedly assaulted some doctors on Sunday night leading to a two-day strike enforced by the physicians from Tuesday. The doctors are about to stage an hour of abstention from work today, demanding safety in their work place.
The strike caused a lot of suffering of hundreds of patients.
