Nor’wester hits different parts of the country

Nor’wester (Kaal Boishakhi) hit different parts of the country including areas of Gazipur, Kishoreganj, and Brahmanbaria, yesterday. At least 10 persons were injured by the nor’wester and it did a lot damage in the aforementioned places.

Our Gazipur correspondent reports that eight villages under three unions of Kapasia upazila in Gazipur were ravaged by the nor’wester in the early hours yesterday. The storm-hit the villages of Lohadi, Pachua, Goserkandi, Naya Sangun, Sultanpur, and Kushdi under Barisaboi union, Veeruzli under Toke union, and Belashi under Raed union in the upazila.

Abdul Jalil, chairman of Toke Union Parishad told the Dhaka Tribune that the village of Veeruzli was the most affected among the eight villages by the sudden nor’wester that swept through those areas around 3am yesterday.

Jamaluddin, a resident from the village of Naya Sangun said banana orchards, jackfruit trees and other fruit-bearing trees were destroyed by the heavy rainfall. Mustafa Kamal, a farmer from the village of Belashi said crops would be benefitted by this heavy rain, but they had lost their valuable fruit-bearing trees.

In the meantime, at least 10 people were injured and around 100 houses were destroyed by the violent storm which swept through Bhairab upazila in Kishoreganj district yesterday morning.

The affected houses include educational institutions and business establishments. A good number of trees were also uprooted in the affected areas by the hail and rain.

The storm-hit areas are Srinagar, Kamarkanda, Shibpur, Kalikaproshad, Shimulkandi, Bhobanipur villages in Bhairab upazila.

The storm also uprooted many electric poles, cutting off the electricity supply of the affected areas, said Md SorafatUllah, officer-in-charge of the Bhairab police station.

At least 40 houses were demolished by the seasonal storm at Bijoynagar upazila in Brahmanbaria in the early hours yesterday. Different types of trees and crops were damaged during the storm.

Locals said the electricity connection of the entire Bijoynagar upazila was severed when trees fell on the transmission lines. The damage is estimated to be around Tk10 lakh, they claimed.

Forty houses in the village of Binnighat under Budhri union in the district were torn apart by the sudden storm. Liton Mia, a victim and resident of the village said a mill house and a home that belonged to him were wrecked by the nor’wester.

Bashirul Haque Bhuiya, upazila nirbahi officer of Bijoynagar said they were going to visit the affected areas. The losses had not been estimated yet.
