PM pays tribute to Bangabandhu

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has paid tribute to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing floral wreath at his portrait marking the historic Mujibnagar Day.  

The PM placed a wreath at the portrait in front of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the capital around 7pm on Thursday, reports UNB.

Hasina stood there in solemn silence for some time as a mark of respects to the architect of the nation.

Later, she placed another wreath as the president of Bangladesh Awami League.

Deputy Leader of Jatiya Sangsad Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Commerce Minister Tofael Ahmed, Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, Post and Telecommunications Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Awami League Presidium members Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and Advocate Sahara Khatun, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque, AL Advisory Council member Advocate Yosuf Hossain Humayun, State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, among others, were present at the time.  

On this day in 1971 the provisional Bangladesh government named Mujibnagar Government was constituted at the Mango Orchard at Baidyanathtala of Meherpur during the Liberation War.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was chosen as the president of the maiden government of Bangladesh.

After the declaration of independence when Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was arrested on the mid-night of March 25 vice-president of the government Syed Nazul Islam served as the acting president.

Tajuddin Ahmed was the prime minister, Khondakar Mostaq Ahmed foreign minister, M Mansur Ali Finance Minister and AHM Qamaruzzaman was the home and relief minister of the provisional government.

This core cabinet steered the Liberation War to the victory on December 16 that year.
