Feni Sadar Hospital flooded with diarrhoea patients

The number of people who have been suffering from diarrhoea related diseases has seen a sharp rise in the district as the extreme hot and humid weather is making things worse.

Consequently, the 250-bed hospital was not being able to accommodate the inflow of patients. As a result, the patients had to staying on the floors and corridors of the hospital to get medical services.

On the other hand, there have been allegations of negligence of duty of doctors and patients here which has worsened the situation.

Sources at the district civil surgeon office said people have been afflicted with various types of diseases, including diarrhoea, caused by the increasing heat and about nine diarrhoea patients got admitted daily against one seat in the ward.

While visiting the diarrhoea ward recently, the relatives and patients alleged to the correspondent that there was no doctor until 1pm though they (doctors) were supposed to visit in the morning.

They also said necessary number of nurses were not also present in the ward.

Most of the patients were low earning people. As a result, they had to be admitted to the hospital and they were not getting any medicine except oral saline.

They also alleged that when they tried to draw attention of the hospital’s Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Ashim Kumar Shaha to the irregularities, but he rebuked them and threatened to discharge their admission.

Contacted, the RMO denied the allegation brought against him, saying the visiting doctors might have been absent during the visit of the correspondent. “There is a scarcity of push saline in the hospital, which is hampering the medical services to the diarrhoea patients.”

Feni Civil Surgeon Dr Jakir Hossain confessed the outbreak of diarrhoea, adding that he would take legal action against the responsible doctors and nurses after investigation.
