2 killed, 30 hurt in Sirajganj train crash

Two people have been killed and at least 30 passengers injured as an intercity train crashed into another in Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj early Sunday.

Ullapara police station Officer-in-Charge AZM Tajul Huda confirmed about the deaths.

The deceased were identified as Altaf Hossain, 35, hailed from Harishpur of Natore and Mujibur Rahman, 50, son of late Hossain Ali, of Eksunnyapara village of Lalmonirhat.

Rail communications between north Bengal and Dhaka remained suspended following the accident.

Tazul said Dhaka-bound Lalmoni Express was waiting on line-1 in Ullapara railway station for crossing around 3am.

On the other hand, Ekota Express was coming to Dhaka from Dinajpur.

Apparently, due to signalling fault, the Ekota Express went to the line-1 and hit Lalmon Express, leaving two dead on the spot and at least 30 passengers injured.

A total of four boggies of the two trains were veered off the line.

Of the injured, six people were sent to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital in Borga in critical conditions.

Pabna Fire Service Assistant Director Saiful Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that four fire fighting units from Sirajganj, Shahjadpur, Pabna and Bera reached the spot and rescued two bodies and 12 injured passengers.

They were continuing rescue operation with the help of RAB, police, members of Government Railway Police (GRP).

Saiful blamed signalman, station master, and railway police for the accident due to negligence to their duties.

Masudur Rahman, railway engineer of Pakshi of west zone, said a relief train went to the spot and was continuing salvage operation since 7am.

“The accident might be occurred due to absence of lineman in the station,” he said, adding, a probe body will be formed to investigate into the accident.

Sirajganj Deputy Commissioner Md Billal Hossain, Police Super S Emran Hossain and railway officials visited the spot.
