An Islami Chhatra Shibir leader, candidate of the ongoing Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) tests, has been shot in “gunfight” with police in Satkhira.
Injured Milon Hossain Sohag, 19, is the Shibir president of Sakhipur KBA College unit and son of Manu Gazi from Debahata upazila, police said.
The gunfight took place near KBA College grounds, Debahata upazila early on Thursday, Debahata police Officer-in-Charge Kazi Jalaluddin Ahmed said.
“We received news that some people were plotting sabotage in the area. They opened fire on law enforcers when police went to the spot,” he said.
“Police opened fire in retaliaton,” he said. “At one point, Sohag dropped to the ground and the other fled leaving him behind.”
Constables Akbar Ali and Hafiz Uddin were injured, he added. Sohag was attending treatments at Sakhipur Health Complex under police security.
Satkhira was believed to be a stronghold of the Jamaat-e-Islami and listed “vulnerable” where spelialised forces were cracking down.
