RU Chatra League postpnoes strike

Bangladesh Chhatra League at Rajshahi University unit on Thursday has postponed indefinite strikes on the campus till April 29.

The strike was called demanding arrest of the killers of Rustom Ali Akond, a BCL leader who was killed in his room at the university dormitory on Friday.

BCL leaders also threatened to go on a tougher movement if their demands are not met by April 29.

The leaders said this at a press conference at the university central cafeteria at around 2:00pm.

BCL RU unit president Mizanur Rahman Rana said they had postponed their indefinite strike for the sake of general students after discussion with the university authorities, police authorities and central chhatra league.

BCL continued strike for the fourth consecutive day on Thursday since Saturday, no classes and examinations were held during the strike at the campus.

BCL RU unit secretary Touhid-al-Hossain Tuhin said, if their six-point demands including arrest of Islami Chhatra Shibir RU unit president Ashraful Alam Emon are not met within April 29, they will declare tougher movements at the campus.

Others demands include financial assistance to the family of the deceased Rustom Ali, banning Shibir politics at the campus, suspension of all Shibir cadres who were involved in all attacks earlier on BCL men including Faruk Hossain who was allegedly killed by the Shibir activists on February 8, 2010, ensuring security of the students at the campus and functioning RU central students union.

Deceased Rustom was a fourth year student of political science department and also the acting general secretary of BCL Shaheed Shuhrawardy Hall unit.

He was allegedly shot dead on Friday in his room at the hall. 

Rustom was also the president candidate for the hall unit council scheduled to be held April 10.

Political science department of the university held a mourning meeting and discussion at the department in the morning and demanded bringing the killers of Rustom before justice as soon as possible.

On Thursday morning, BCL also held a mass signature campaign in front of the central library in support of their demands.

Sharmin Akhter, a magistrate of Rajshahi chief metropolitan magistrate court on Thursday granted one day remand to two Shibir men detained on Sunday followed by the Rustom killing, while police asked for seven days remand, Ziaur Rahman, officer-in-charge of DB, said.

The detainees were Shibir Dashmari area finance secretary Sanaullah Jacky and activist Khurshed Alam.

"There was no more arrest in connection with the murder while police were trying to arrest the masterminds behind the Rustom murder," he also said.

Sohel Rana, a sub-inspector of Motihar police and also the investigation officer of the Rustom murder case filed by BCL RU unit vice-president Mehedi Hasan said police were proceeding with the case giving prominence on all possibilities beyond the incident and added investigation progressed however could not be disclosed at the moment.

RU proctor Prof Tarikul Hasan told Dhaka Tribune that action will be taken against the killers of Rustom as per police report.

Additional police were deployed on the campus to keep the university situation stable.
