Obaidul: Drive against unfit vehicles next month

Communication Minister Obaidul Quader has said the government will start a special drive next month to evict unfit vehicles from the capital’s streets to ensure congestion-free traffic flow.

The minister made the announcement while visiting the operations of a mobile court of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority in front of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport yesterday.

During the visit, he also penalised 13 vehicles for not having proper documents and fitness certificates while another 4 vehicles have been sent to the dump as their validity had expired.

A driver, who did not have any documents, including a driving license, was sent to jail by the mobile court.

Urging the people and media to play positive role to reduce accident and traffic congestion, the minister said: “The government is trying to eliminate these issues shortly to ease traffic so that people can move easily and freely.”

He also ordered authorised traffic officials to set Digital Traffic Signaling System and to use rumble strips at the airport area by widening the dividers further.

Roads and Highway Division Chief Engineer Md Shahabuddin and Deputy Commissioner of Traffic North Zone Shah Abdin Hossain, among other officials, were present during the minister’s visit.
